Smile While Love Above

I was over at my cousin's, and as always, our discussions about the serious side of life always happens during our shisha sessions (try saying that 10 times really fast!).

It came to a point where we talked about how we coped with the difficult times in our lives. She showed me a book of hers, a collection of quotes from people in her life and some that she'd read around. It reminded me of the ones I used to have when I was younger.

A lot of you may not know this (or any of you at all, really), but I used to write poems. Before I thought of the keyboard as an extension of my fingers, I was a real pen and paper kind of girl. I had notebooks lying around everywhere in my room (mostly cause I couldn't find the ones I had, so I went and bought a new one, only to find it a few days after!) so I could write down whatever it was I was thinking about. It was fun. I fancied myself creative. :P I don't know what happened but it stopped around the time I graduated high school. Maybe my infamous lazy-phase caught up with me. But I miss it. I'll have to try my hand and rhyming again. :)

Anyhow, that wasn't the point. The point is that, I remembered that I only ever wrote my poems when I was suffering. Apparently, I was one of those people who only ever found their creative streak when they're in pain. I was a little pissed at myself at not being able to spout poetic whenever I had something I was really happy about. This, from a person who thrives on laughter. I wasn't exactly proud of having my best works *ahem* come out infused with misery. No, I wasn't happy at all.

Anytime I tried to write something happy, it always came out corny. Imagine a teeny-bopper song. That's exactly what it would sound like. So, no go.

I tried looking for my earlier works, but I found out I hadn't saved any of them at all. I'm sure they're somewhere in my house back in Sandakan, under a mountain of dust. We moved around a lot see. And I'm too scared of spiders to go through the boxes in the store. :) We'll see what I can come up with, and whether or not I feel they're good enough to post. But considering how happy-smiley I am these days, I'll probably come up with a ton of sappy poems to please Hanson circa 97. Things like the title of this post *rolls eyes*.

hehehe, i was a 'fashion designer' back during highschool. Being a science student then, which was so boring and nerdy, i found peace in designing evening gowns and dresses. initially designed for myself it finally got extended to close friends and then expanded to juniors. I still have those designs behind my closet..tetiba rasa bangga..te he he

i noticed that most prominent poem writers are those who suffered at least something worst along their live. its like, sufferings and pains heighten your sensitivity towards life and whatever is happening around it.

but thast just my observation lah kono :)

In my culture, it is simply more socially acceptable to express one's positive emotions than those we consider negative (ie., our fears, hurt, anger). I suspect this is true worldwide. So I think it's probably very natural that, for most of us, our writing will tend to express those things that we can't express in our everyday lives. Don't you think?

hmm...u can only write when in pain?...reminds me of someone I know..but then again most of the 'greats' do write wonderful pieces when they're in quite a predicament usually. Maybe you can share with us some of your poems then? :)

I used to write a couple of sappy poems when I was pregnant with Buddy. Adakah tercreative pulak time tu. LOL! After reading it back, it was too corny.. but I guess corny goes well with babies. hahaha..

Anyways, I found them in my kid's sisters notebook.. I'm like "aik, why is it there??" Please God, don't let her turn out to be one of those sappy corny teenagers. hahaha..
