Men and The Humble Sanitary Pad

I once had an emergency, where I woke up from a nap 1 afternoon to find that I'd gotten my period. I was at this time enjoying my holiday, visiting my sister in Kota Kinabalu. Since it wasn't my house, and I'm not one of those girls who count the days to their next menstrual cycle, I didn't have any pads on me. Groggy, and not too comfortable, I went to my brother and asked him, very nicely, if he could drive down to a nearby store to get me some. Let me share the conversation.

Me: B, can you get some pads for me? It's an emergency.

B: WHAT? NO WAY!

Me: Please! I didn't bring any with me.

B: No! What's wrong with you? Why don't you go yourself? It's not like you're sick or anything!

At this point, I've given up the argument. There I was, trying my best not to sit on anything, and he expects me to get into a car and drive. Right.

Fortunately for me, I found some of the goodies stocked in my sister's room.

I had an ex-boyfriend who had the same view of pads. Fortunately for him, I'm creative, and I devised a way for him for get used to it. Don't worry, I didn't do anything mean. He's still alive and unhurt (more's the pity), with a healthy perspective towards the everyday (or month) product.

Anyhow, I still don't see why a sanitary pad can inspire mortal fear in some men. It's as if they've gone through some macho-conditioning that tells them to stay away from what is essentially a bigger sized cotton pad. Honestly, it's just a pad. People know what it's for. M-E-N-S-T-R-U-A-T-I-O-N. You'd think that it was the Plague, the way they stay away from it.

It's not going to make you less manly, guys! Trust me! In fact, it may do you a lot of good to help your female friends to get them when needs be.

Think about it. If your female friend has gone through what I have, and you just happen to be different and actually help her, she'll be so grateful that you'll be in her good graces for a long time (at least, until the next argument)!

If we can buy your underwear for you, you can certainly reciprocate once in awhile by getting us our box of Kotex.
